Whitfords Nodes Stairway

Whitfords, WA

Emerge Associates were engaged by the City of Joondalup to design a fitness stairway located on a coastal dune at Whitfords Nodes, Hillarys Beach Park. The stairway is the main attraction of a health and wellbeing hub.

Emerge was involved in the design of the main attraction of the hub, a 145-step staiway often referred to as the ‘Jacob’s Ladder of the North’ that provides a pedestrian connection between the parkland below and the lookout structure at the top of the dunes.

The stairway is an integral component for the long term redevelopment of Whitfords Nodes, within a health and wellbeing hub for the local community. The structure provides shaded lookout platforms and rest points which are large enough to be incorporated with exercise routines. A feature balustrade has been designed with the potential to program structured workouts based on the colour and numbering system to each level.

Emerge were required to give careful consideration as to how the structure would sit sympathetically in the existing environmentally sensitive dunal system of the Bush Forever site, with minimal disturbance. Formalising the recreational area will assist in protecting the dunes and its vegetation.
