Burns Beach

Burns Beach, WA

The Burns Beach project is a significant new coastal residential community located within the City of Joondalup and focuses upon key linkages and views to the coastal edge. The majority of the development landscape infrastructure occurred early to provide direct beach access and key access from Marmion Avenue to the coast. The central spine contains a series of public open space areas which reinforce the site’s coastal character.

The landscape project faced the challenges of a coastal environment.  The challenges of the brief, to create a usable public open space which maximises coastal views whilst providing shelter from South Easterly winds, were met through careful design consideration.

The foreshore reserve interface required a comprehensive foreshore management plan which has permitted the construction of a recreational node to be approved within a foreshore reserve. This included the retention of significant foreshore and existing vegetation to the northeast of the project. This has served as an example for the latter developments ie Alkimos and Eglington as a model for successful integration and public use/access through a foreshore reserve.

The central spine contains a series of public open space areas which reinforce the site’s coastal character. Landscape planting, details and materials have been detailed and selected to provide robust and long life results within an exposed site affected by salt and wind.

Streetscapes are designed to reflect the hierarchy of the development as well as strengthen pedestrian legibility throughout the project. Rehabilitation and stabilisation of coastal areas has been designed to allow for both pedestrian access as well as emergency vehicles.

A public art strategy has been developed for Burns Beach that reflects the coastal environment in which the site is set. Bronze and steel sculptures created by several high profile Perth artists create features within the POS areas. This project worked consistently and strongly with the existing adjacent community and local environment groups to deliver a solid design outcome that meets the projects full range of target and approval objectives.
