Preston Street Revival

Como, WA

Emerge were engaged by the Australian Property Collective to assist in the revitalisation of Preston Street from Labouchere Road to Como Beach foreshore. The project’s intent is to create a vision and establish an objectives-based framework for the future development of the precinct.

For the Sustainability Advisory team, the primary component of work was an options paper that detailed how to engage and embed sustainability requirements for future built-form developers, at such an early stage of the project planning. This included balancing firm sustainability commitments with ensuring that design requirements include options for future inclusion. As part of our engagement we presented to the community and key stakeholders a range of sustainability options that acknowledged the community expectations and concerns associated with the revitalisation, and placed them in a broader sustainability context.

Our Landscape team were involved in the landscape design of the Preston Street project to realise its potential as an attractive and vibrant main street. The proposal includes high quality mixeduse development on vacant and ‘derelict’ sites reflective of the street’s strong character and identity. The requirement of the streetscape design is to provide a greater level of activity and events to draw community together, support local business and a new evening economy. The streetscape design proposes the introduction of a Shared Zone through seamless transition verges and carriageway paving materials.

The heritage status of the Cygnet Cinema’s Art Deco facade is to be celebrated in paving patterns and the landscape palette including public art. Alfresco dining, more abundant landscape and the creation of gathering and celebration spaces, including a small children’s and youth play space, that responds to and reflects the main street context will complement improved pedestrian and cycling amenity.
