Emerge Associates were engaged by the City of Joondalup to design a pedestrian stairway located on a coastal dune at the Whitfords Node, Hillarys Beach Park. This much-anticipated ‘Jacob’s Ladder of the North’ is nearing completion, with the project expected to open to the public in September.
The 21m-high exercise stairway serves as a pedestrian connection between the parkland below and the lookout structure at the top of the dunes, and includes landscaping, new fitness areas, shelters, drink fountains and footpaths.
An integral component for the long term redevelopment of the Whitfords Nodes, the stairway will provide shaded lookout platforms and rest points which are also large enough to be incorporated with exercise routines. The design includes a feature balustrade, with the potential to program structured workouts based on the colour and numbering system to each level.
Emerge were required to give careful consideration as to how the structure would sit sympathetically in the existing environmentally sensitive dunal system of the Bush Forever site, with minimal disturbance and to assist in the protection of the dunes and its vegetation.
